women and girls...

At Copeland Canoe Club, we want paddling to be for everyone. Paddlesport is fun, sociable and accessible for all ages and abilities; however, we know there are fewer women paddlers than men both nationally and in our club and we want to do something about it.

We want to get more women and girls paddling in Copeland, we also want to see progression for our women and girls into coaching and leadership roles. In 2021, Alison Bird joined the club committee to represent women and girls and we support the British Canoeing initiative #ShePaddles, aiming to get more women and girls into paddlesport.

More Paddlesport Instructors

Alison has completed several days of training to become qualified as Paddlesport Instructors (SUP). Well done! This will allow us to help more members to try out SUPs for themselves. Thanks to British Canoeing for supporting them with funding for the course. We are now looking for volunteers to coninue this great start with courses in 2026.

We want to welcome and support women and girls of any age and ability to get into paddling. It is fun, easy and good for your mental and physical health. If you are still unsure, here's some encouragement.

Reasons to make paddling your new hobby!

It's easy to start - whatever your experience, we have coaches and equipment to help get you on the water for the first time. We have club kit and boats for all shapes and sizes that you can borrow. If you already have experience and gear, you can use your own, borrow what you need and come and enjoy our sessions.

It's social - we are a mix of ages and abilities and we are a supportive bunch of people. Whether you are coming on your own or with a friend, if it's your first time, we will connect you with a more experienced paddler to help you. We have all been beginners at some stage and we know it can be daunting.

It's fun for families - we have children and adults paddling together so if you bring children, you can all get on the water together. We have a special membership price for families and we have different equipment to suit your family's needs at different ages. Alternatively, you might want to come without your kids for some "escape time"!

You can relax and enjoy - being on the water is perfect for a little headspace, giving you new perspectives on the world and bringing you closer to nature. Whether you want to paddle to meet people, as a hobby or to de-stress, we have sessions where the focus is on recreation and leisure.

It's good for you - paddling is a great form of low impact, strength building and cardio exercise, toning arms, legs and core. It's great for building confidence and self-esteem and we think it is much more fun than going to the gym - you can do as much or as little as you enjoy!

It can be challenging too - if you thrive on adventure or want to test your abilities, we have sessions where you can challenge yourself more, either on the river, in the surf or over longer distances. When on a club trip, you can enjoy the adventure with others.
